Born in Albuquerque, NM, jazz
trumpeter Bobby Shew has performed with various bands since the age
of 13, playing as many as six nights a week in dinner clubs throughout his
high school years.
After three years as jazz trumpet soloist in the famed NORAD
multi-service band, Bobby joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and
then the swinging bands of Buddy Rich and Woody Herman.
After nine years in Las Vegas as a lead player, Bobby moved to Los Angeles
in 1973 to concentrate on developing as a jazz soloist. Since then, he's
performed with such stellar groups as the Art Pepper Quintet, Bud Shank
Quintet, Frank Strazzeri Sextet featuring Sam Most, the Chuck
Flores Quintet, Barry Zweig Five, and he also formed his own widely
accepted group.
Bobby's talents also have been showcased with studio work for numerous
TV programs, including "Bob Newhart", "Streets of San Francisco", and
"Happy Days", as well as in soundtracks
for a barrage of motion pictures such as "Grease", and "Grease
II", "Rocky", "Six-Pack", and "The Muppet Movie", to name only a few.
Bobby has completed several seasons as the host of "Just Jazz",
a weekly half-hour jazz TV show from New Zealand, and has made progress
towards starting a jazz program in the New Zealand school system. He has
also served for several years as chairman for the National Association of
Jazz Educators.
Today, Bobby tours the United States as well as Europe, Japan, Canada,
Australia, and New Zealand, giving more than 130 high school clinics and
concerts each year. For the past five years, he has made annual treks to
this area, sometimes bringing along his entire group for clinics and a
tour of the country. |
