At the time of his
performance with the Altamonte Jazz Ensemble, Christian Tamburr
was an 18-year-old honor student at Satellite High School in Satellite
Beach, Florida, actively involved in the music program under the
direction of Mark Nelson. His repertoire of percussion
instruments includes marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, timpani, trap set,
and various world percussion instruments. He is also accomplished on
piano, organ and guitar.
Christian's primary passion is for jazz and vibraphone. He favors
straight ahead jazz, but can be heard playing anything that
swings...even Dixie! He has recently begun performing his own
compositions and arrangements, encompassing various styles of music.
Christian has had the opportunity to perform on stage with some very
fine musicians including Ira Sullivan, Bucky Pizzarelli, Milt Hinton,
Turk Mauro, Terry Myers, Dick Hyman, Peter Appleyard, Michael Andrew, and
Bob Haggart to name a few. Just recently Christian had the
opportunity to play on stage with seven-time Grammy nominee Mark
Murphy at Heidi's Jazz Club in Cocoa Beach.
One of Christian's most memorable experiences was a concert to benefit
the Central Florida Jazz Society Scholarship Fund. In an article about
the event in the June 1996 issue of "Mississippi Rag", Rick Fay
wrote, "In all, 47 performers gave their time and talents. I am sure
none of them would disagree if I tell you who was the biggest hit of the
day. It was vibraphonist Christian Tamburr. During his set
the seasoned listener could hear echoes of all the great vibe men -
Hampton, Norvo...Milt Jackson. It is a lead pipe cinch this player
will take his place among them." |
