In 1948 Bob Flanigan,
Don and Ross
Barbour, and Hal Kratzsch formed an innovative male vocal group at Butler
University. Dubbing themselves The Four Freshmen, the group devised a style
of harmonizing with the lead melody voice on top and widely spread chord
voicing, similar to jazz big band writing. Another unique aspect of the
quartet was their outstanding abilities as instrumentalists. Before long The Four Freshmen were regularly performing professionally. The big break came in 1950 when bandleader Stan Kenton heard them and enthusiastically urged Capitol Records to sign the group. The Four Freshmen would soon be known worldwide. Since that time numerous outstanding musicians have performed as part of the quartet, upholding the high standards of musicianship of the original group. The Four Freshmen today are Chris Calderon, Brian Eichenberger, Bob Ferreira, and Vince Johnson. Just as the Glenn Miller Orchestra was sustained over the years, so will The Four Freshmen. |
