WUCF is blessed with
many talented people - both on the employee and on the community/student
volunteer side. One of the sparkling jewels in the WUCF collection
is long time jazz host Jack Simpson.
Jack Simpson was born and educated in England. He served in the Royal Air
Force from 1942 to 1947. He then fulfilled a boyhood ambition by
immigrating to the United States. He was employed for thirty years by RCA,
occupying various management positions at Cape Canaveral Air Force
station, and at Patrick Air Force Base, both located here in Florida. He
is married with four children and four grandchildren. He and his wife
Lorraine live in Cocoa.
A long-time lover of jazz, he aired his first "Jazz on the Beach"
radio program in July 1967 on Radio WRKT in Cocoa Beach. It is now
heard Saturday mornings on WUCF- FM Orlando, and Thursday evenings
on WFIT - FM Melbourne. Last year, the staff and friends
of WUCF - FM celebrated Jack's thirteenth anniversary of jazz
broadcasting with a party at Heidi's Jazz Club in Cocoa Beach. In
addition to his volunteer hosting duties, Simpson has also been busy since
1970 producing various jazz concerts and festivals. In 1984 at the request
of the United Way, a community food bank was established in Brevard
County. Jack Simpson was named chairman of its advisory board. The food
bank now serves 135 charitable agencies, distributing more than a half
million pounds of food each year. Jack began a series of annual jazz
benefit concerts for the food bank.
We're proud to have a
personality like Jack Simpson volunteering his time as Master of
Ceremonies for the Altamonte Jazz Ensemble Concerts, and on the 89.9
airwaves each week. |
